The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE, Brookfield, Conn., USA) Thermoset Div. has announced its first keynote speaker for the annual TopCon event which will take place May 17-18, 2022 at the Monona Terrace and Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin.
“Thermosets – A Historical and Future Perspective” will be presented by Professor Tim A. Osswald, Director of the Polymer Engineering Center (PEC) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His presentation will take the audience on a journey through time, from the “heat and pressure” patent application in 1907, to the growth of an industry now known as the thermosetting plastics industry, which ultimately led to a new branch in the composites industry; Osswald will guide the public through bakelite panels filled with asbestos and unsaturated polyester fiberglass during World War II, to a growing industry of sheet molding compound (SMC) automotive body panels and today’s aerospace applications. Finally, the presentation will look at the future of thermosets through the emerging field of 3D printing, including hybrid structures.
Osswald is Honorary Professor of Plastics Technology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg in Germany and at the National University of Colombia. His research includes modeling and simulation in polymer processing, engineering design with plastics and composites, and sustainability in plastics manufacturing. Professor Osswald was also editor-in-chief in English of the Journal of Polymer Technology and editor for the Americas for Journal of Polymer Engineering.
In addition, he has published over 300 peer-reviewed conference and journal articles as well as 15 pounds translated into five languages, including: “International Plastics Handbook ”(2019); “Polymer processing – Modeling and simulation” (2006); “Understanding Polymer Processing” (2017); and “Polymer Materials Science for Engineering” (2012). Osswald has also been an expert witness in polymer engineering litigation, including product, patent and intellectual property failure, and sits on the advisory boards of several companies. He is currently adviser to the President of Colombia in the creation of a new Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
The SPE Thermoset TopCon 2022 will feature technical presentations and exhibits highlighting advancements in materials, processes and equipment for thermosetting technologies in the electrical, automotive, off-road, utility, and automotive industries. home appliance, aerospace, building and construction, oil and gas and others. The conference includes a full day of technical sessions with a networking breakfast, lunch and cocktail on May 17th and a networking breakfast on May 18th. Optional social events, including a golf outing to University Ridge Golf Course, a visit to the University of Wisconsin-Madison Polymer Engineering Center (PEC), and a Madison Coastal Cruise via a private yacht with sundowners and luxury drinks are offered on May 16, the day before the conference begins.
