Modeling career

“From the outside, it looked like I had it all…inside, I felt like I had hit rock bottom” [Video]

model Gisele Bundchen talks about the crippling anxiety and severe panic attacks that plagued her early in her career – and the lifestyle changes she made to feel better.

In a recent interview with British vogue, the 41-year-old opened up about her early days in the modeling industry. Bündchen made her runway debut in 1998 and quickly became one of the most recognizable faces in the high fashion world. Between dating superstar Leonardo DiCaprio and being plastered all over billboards, the Brazilian model seemed to be living his dream.

“From the outside, it looked like I had everything and was only 22. Inside, I felt like I had hit rock bottom,” she said.

However, below the surface, the model revealed she was battling crippling anxiety and severe panic attacks.

“I would start my day with a Mocha Frappuccino with whipped cream and three cigarettes, then I would drink a bottle of wine every night. Imagine what that felt like in my mind,” the mother-of-two said of her early career habits.

Eventually things reached a breaking point for the model and she sought help from a naturopath, someone who specializes in the use of natural remedies to help the body heal itself.

She was put through a strict detox that required the young model to cut out sugar, grains, dairy, caffeine, alcohol and cigarettes.

To say the transition has been difficult for Bündchen would be an understatement.

“I think these are the worst migraines I have ever had in my life. The doctor, he was French, called me Adrénaline,” referring to the impact of withdrawal on his nervous system.

However, Bündchen knew it was better to fight the cold turkey switch than the dark alternative she was headed towards.

“I remember he said to me, ‘Well, you want to live?’ It was as simple as that.

Three months later, she is thriving in her new lifestyle and has become the highest paid model in the world for fifteen years.

While the model has since retired from the track, the NFL wife still has a few games up her sleeve.

Her latest venture is a cookbook that will detail the details of her famous nutritional meals that she has perfected over the years.
