What does it take to launch a modeling career? That Expert Show host Anna Canzano interviewed Sanjana Ravi on Monday night, a young model who worked for brands like Ulta, Sephora and Nike during her first year of modeling.
Ravi says the industry has changed over the past few years. She says agencies used to require models to be 5′9″ and taller, with a 24-inch waist. She finds that many agencies are now less picky about a model’s dimensions and more focused on inclusivity, personality and natural beauty.

She also shared that finding the right modeling agency can take time. Ravi finally found his after much trial and error. Many larger agencies have more models and that means it can be more difficult to book a gig.
The aspiring beauty and fashion model also shared ideas on how to grow a photo portfolio for less money than you think, red flags to watch out for in the industry and ways to connect with the brands you hope to associate with.

She emphasized the importance of being true to yourself. “Don’t compromise your morals if you’re not comfortable with certain types of filming. If your agency pushes you to do shoots that you don’t agree with, it may be a sign that it’s not the right agency for you,” Ravi advised.
